DIY History

Unearth the science and history of coal mining in southwestern Pennsylvania! For this hands-on DIY History Day, kids can explore the processes that extracted coal from the ground and turned it into coke, a fuel for Pittsburgh’s booming steel industry. Learn how coal powered America’s economic might in the 19th century and beyond, thanks in part to industrialists like Henry Clay Frick, who was born at West Overton. Discover what life was like for coal miners and see real artifacts from the Museum collection.

Drop in anytime from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. to explore history and do-it-yourself!

This DIY History Day coincides with the opening of a new exhibition about the early years of Henry Clay Frick, located in the Springhouse where he was born.

DIY (Do-It-Yourself) History Days are a new program series of free, hands-on activities for children in the Museum.

This program is generously funded by the EQT Foundation.
