You can be a part of our history…

It has long been assumed by many that Helen Clay Frick established the Westmoreland-Fayette Historical Society (now West Overton Museums) solely as a tribute to her industrialist father, Henry Clay Frick, who was born on the Overholt property in 1849. In reality, her foresight extended well beyond family connections with the primary mission statement of the organization being the preservation of the cultural heritage of the Village of West Overton.

Over the past decade, West Overton has seen several administrations that have each taken a different approach to organization and conservation of the vast artifact collections, interpretation of the historic themes and development of historic programs. All have had a positive influence on the successes at West Overton but with each administrative transition have come the starts and stops that have left projects orphaned and goals unrealized. Variations in management, over-extensions of available resources and the march of time can render a museum out of synch with its mission; West Overton is currently at that juncture.

In order to bring West Overton back in line with its original mission of preserving the history of the village, the site is closed for tours and public events while we undertake a Revitalization Project that will restructure and reorganize the site into the historical treasure that it is.

The tasks being undertaken include building stabilization, collections management and the development of more informative and compelling historical narratives. New exhibitry planned for the museum will highlight the original function of the building as a combination distillery and grist mill and the artifacts and cultural objects in our collection will be better utilized to tell the story of West Overton and its environs.

Please consider being a part of this monumental undertaking by becoming a new member or renewing your membership to West Overton Museums. Your membership provides more than discounted admission; your funding sustains the on-going conservation of the site and, going forward through the Revitalization Project, will provide the much needed financial resources that are necessary to bring the museum back to life.
